Spring Fling 2013

Spring Fling for our painting chapter is finished once again! The theme was Passport to Adventure and my table this year was a Paris brocante (flea market) and consisted of an Eiffel tower lamp with a painted shade, a painted table, a small wall pocket, and tote bags. The metal table was one I had that no longer had a home, so I painted roses on the top and did some collage & embossed stamping on the top. There was a really neat scalloped edge under the top and I had a whole collection of vintage crystals that I wired & hung - one in each scallop (there was already a hole there). I made tote bags (8 of them!) for everyone and that entailed a lot of sewing - and hand stitching. I even printed some of the fabric in the flower bundles using my new Gelli plate! That was so much fun and I will be sharing some of this soon. There were also rose flavored french macarons from Le Macaron, the french bakery in Winter Park. All in all, it was a fabulous day! And I am so glad it is over and done for the year - on to the next deadline!!

Hoppy Easter!

Spring has finally arrived! It is still a bit cool for this time of year but much warmer weather can't be too far behind. And with Easter and Passover being celebrated this weekend it should be a pretty busy few days. "Hoppy" is a mixed media piece I created for our Art Journaling group with Kelly Hoernig. It is a 6" x 6" archival panel with layers of printed tissue paper, hand dyed silk threads, a photo of my resin bunny and some other decoupage elements with a little hand lettering and drawing thrown in. A couple of people commented that he looked like a chocolate bunny. Maybe the Easter Bunny will leave me one of those. May you have a peaceful spring season however you choose to celebrate... so hop to it!

Simply Sensational Scarves

This is the second class I will be teaching at Artist Expo in Houston - July 16-20. Silk is sometimes considered a difficult medium to do with all the prep, then steaming to set the colors at the end of the painting process. The dye I use for this technique is a protein based dye that grabs the silk very quickly. It is perfect for a great variety of free form patterns and is very easy clean-up. The best part - no steaming!! After the dye adheres (the residual water is clear) simply roll the silk in a towel to remove as much water as possible and then iron dry. The ironing part is not to set the colors but to remove the wrinkles. Ironing while damp makes it much easier to have smooth silk at the end. This is too much fun!

Orchid Solo

I am finally back to teaching - YAY! This is a 4 hour class I will be teaching at the 8th Annual Artist Expo in Houston from July 16-20, 2013. This is a fantastic art convention!! Everything is under one roof and local restaurants & shopping is really easy access. I have two classes this year and am also planning to have a booth on the trade floor. You don't want to miss this! The first piece of a new series! Let me introduce you to Secondhand Rosie... Rosie came to me fully formed in the dead of the night. I was leaving early the next morning on a trip and needed a good night's sleep but Rosie had other ideas. She and her friends woke me and insisted I get up right away. I could see an entire series of paintings all at once and this almost never happens. Usually I work more in a trial and error method. She will be my first workshop for the year and I already have 36 students signed up!

Dark Path

Shifting creative gears has its ups and downs. Right now, I am trying to use the catalyst of the fire to change the way I make art and follow a new path.

Now that I'm done rebuilding the house...

It has been a long time since my last post. The house kicked serious butt. The mojo was seriously compromised for a very long time. But things are changing. New work is being completed. Teaching a mixed media workshop in April. Teaching in Houston again in July and seriously excited about that. And I am participating in an Art Journal group that is all about experimentation and creativity. It is too fun and is just what I need to jumpstart some new ideas!! I will be sharing some of my pages in progress in some upcoming posts and talking about how I created them. I will share a page from the journal today. This is just the first layer but uses a tool that is probably in every painter's toolbox but probably hasn't been used in years... the lowly graining tool. Check it out!

Moving On

SEPTEMBER 2011 - Fortunately we were able to salvage a great deal out of the house that night. When the fire chief let us go back in, I started pulling art off the walls and handing it to friends & neighbors to get it out of the house! No AC and lots of moisture is very bad for artwork!! Our neighbors across the street allowed us to use their dining room and we stacked all the artwork there for safekeeping. Hubby's job was to get all the paperwork & other pertinent items that we would need right away. Our insurance adjustor just happened to live the next street over and was there before the fire department left. He was a big help in guiding us through the next few steps - finding a dog friendly hotel for the next few days, putting in a request for interim living expenses, etc. We pulled together a few clothes & papers, some toiletries, & left for the night. Fortunately, the doors could be locked and no windows were broken. All through the night the police department assigned extra patrols along with the fire department checking several times to make sure the fire was truly out. OCTOBER 2012 - One of my new art directions has been hand dyed silk. Silk has such a wonderful sheen and feel. It has a reputation for being difficult to handle but I love a challenge! This is a mixed media piece that incorporates hand dyed silk, quilting, stamping & free form embossed paper & beading. The title - QUIET MORNING

The Aftermath - Rebirth

This past year has been one of many changes. Our house was struck by lightning last September. Fortunately, I had just arrived home and was able to call 911 and get the dog out. By the time the fire department arrived smoke was pouring out of the soffits but no flames through the roof. Just how close we came to losing everything was very apparent when the shingles were removed. Gaping holes where the decking was burned away made it obvious that the fire was only moments away from breaching through the shingles & taking the whole thing down to the ground! Fortunately, there was a lot left to salvage after the fire was out. But that is not a story I want to tell today. What would you do if all of your artwork suddenly disappeared? How would you cope? What steps would you take to get started again? Would losing it all make you want to do things differently? The imagery of a phoenix rising from ashes became all too real in one thunderbolt!

Merry Christmas

No, I didn't disappear off the face of the earth. There has been lots of travel and some commission work that I couldn't talk about. Then there was the daughter's wedding and all the preparations that entails. Oh, and the house fire two weeks before the wedding. There will be more on that later. There will eventually be photos but not quite yet.

There hasn't been much artwork being created in the past few months... the house has seen to that! We were struck by lightning in September and are in the process of rebuilding. Hopefully, all will be put to rights by the end of January and we can go home again. That day can't happen too soon!

Even before all of activities of the past several months, I contemplated making some changes in how, when & why I made art. There will certainly be some new art paths to be explored in the coming new year so some back then to see where this leads.
